Requirements
Do I need this, and who does it apply to?
- Do I need a boating license?
Most states require boater education rather than a license. What you earn is a boater education certificate or card that proves you completed an approved course. Whether it applies to you usually depends on your birth date, your age, and the type of vessel you operate. Choose your state to see the current rule.
- Does my certificate expire?
In most states a boater education certificate is earned once and does not expire or require renewal. Some states have their own rules for replacements and for temporary certificates, which our state pages cover.
- Is my certificate valid in other states?
Each state sets its own boater education requirements and decides which certificates it honors, so we can't answer that in general. Email support@americanboatingfoundation.com with the state you're asking about and the team will confirm it for you.
- How young can someone take the course?
There is no minimum age to take the course itself, and many families certify a teenager ahead of the season. Operating a boat alone is a separate question — each state sets its own minimum operating age and supervision rules.
The Course
How the course actually works.
- How long does it take?
It is self-paced. Most people finish in a few sittings rather than one. Your progress saves automatically, so you can stop mid-chapter and pick up where you left off on any device.
- Can I use my phone?
Yes. The course runs in a browser on a phone, tablet, or computer — there is nothing to install. Start on a phone and finish on a laptop if you like.
- Is there a final exam, and what if I don't pass?
There is a final assessment set by the state's approved course standard. If you do not pass on your first attempt, contact us and we will walk you through your options under that state's rules.
- Do I have to finish in one sitting?
No. Log out whenever you need to. Sign back in with the same email address and your place is waiting.
Signing In
Accounts, email, and getting back in.
- I never set a password. How do I sign in?
By design. Enter your email address on the login page and we send you a sign-in link. Clicking it signs you in — there is no password to forget or leak.
- The sign-in link never arrived.
Check spam and promotions first, and confirm you used the same address you enrolled with. Links are single-use and expire, so request a fresh one rather than reusing an old email. Still stuck? See the help center.
- Can I change the email on my account?
Email us from the address on the account and we will help. Because your certificate is issued in the learner's name and tied to that address, changes are handled by a person rather than automatically.
Certificate
After you pass.
- When do I get my certificate?
Your certificate is issued as soon as you pass — you do not wait on the mail to be legal where a temporary or digital certificate is recognized. Any permanent card issued by the state follows under that state's process.
- I lost my card. Can I get a replacement?
Yes. Sign in and download your certificate again at any time, and contact us if you need a replacement card handled through your state.
- Is my name printed exactly as I entered it?
Yes — certificates and state rosters use the learner's legal name and date of birth exactly as entered, so check the spelling carefully at enrollment. If something is wrong, contact us before the record is submitted to the state.
Payment
Cost, receipts, and refunds.
- What does the course cost?
Price is set per state and shown on that state's page and at checkout, with no surprise fees added afterward. Choose your state to see the current price.
- Can someone else pay for my course?
Yes. The account, the certificate, and the record belong to the learner being certified, regardless of whose card is used. Billing details never change the learner's name on the certificate.
- Do you offer refunds?
